Dexamethasone, a low-cost and readily available drug, can help save the lives of patients who become seriously ill with coronary heart disease. A group of experts from the United Kingdom were quoted in the BBC report as saying on Tuesday.

Experts say dexamethasone has brought unimaginable success against this deadly virus. Corona patient use of the drug in small doses has great results. Dexamethasone reduces the risk of death in one-third of patients who use a ventilator and one-fifth of patients who receive oxygen. Dexamethasone is one of the drugs being tested against corona worldwide.

According to researchers, if the drug had been used at the onset of coronary heart disease, more than 5,000 lives would have been saved in the UK. The poorer countries, which are more affected by the cheaper prices, can get much better results by using dexamethasone.
A team of researchers from the University of Oxford conducted a study on corona patients using this dexamethasone. They applied the drug to 2,000 patients in the hospital. They were then compared with 4,000 patients who had not been treated.
Studies have shown that the risk of death in patients using ventilators has dropped from 40 percent to 28 percent. And the risk of death for patients who need oxygen has been reduced from 25 percent to 20 percent.
Professor Peter Herbie, chief investigator of the research team, said it was the only effective and the only drug to reduce coronary mortality and that it was an unimaginable achievement.
Professor Martin Landrei, who led the study on the use of dexamethasone in patients with coronary heart disease, said doctors should use the drug in hospitals without delay.
